What to Buy
A wealth of shopping opportunities awaits the visitor, and bargains abound throughout our country in traditional handicrafts, textiles, gems, jewellery and antiques, as well as more contemporary items.
Bangkok, is the Orient's most cosmopolitan city and has attractions to stimulate even the most jaded travellers. Created as the Thai capital in 1782 by the first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty, Bangkok is a national treasure house and Thailand's spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic centre. known to its estimated 12 million citizens as the City of Angels (Krung Thep), is a city of extremes. The splendor of the huge guard statues at the Grand Palace and the dazzling Temple Of The Emerald Buddha stand in contrast to the maddening traffic jams along Sukhumvit Road. Bangkok is a vast sprawling web of a metropolis, with glittering shopping plazas, bustling canals, golden artifacts, neon-lit bars, and rickety slum shanties. The city is an international center for business and commerce, drawing business travelers all year.

Thailand's "City of Angels" is, indeed, a magic place where possibilities are limited only by the imagination.

Topography: Thailand is divided into four distinct areas : the mountainous North, the fertile Central Plains, the semi-arid plateau of the Northeast, and the peninsula South, distinguished by its many beautiful tropical beaches and offshore islands.
Climate: Thailand lies within the humid tropics and remains hot throughout the year. Average temperatures are about 29oC, ranging in Bangkok from 35oC in April to 17oC in December. There are three seasons: the cool season (November to February), the hot season (April to May), and the rainy season (June to October), though downpours rarely last more than a couple of hours.
Population:
Thailand has a population of about 60 million. Ethnic Thais form the majority, though the area has historically been a migratory crossroads, and thus strains of Mon, Khmer, Burmese, Lao, Malay, Indian and most strongly, Chinese stock produce a degree of ethnic diversity. Integration is such, however, that culturally and socially there is enormous unity.

Tour Suggestions
Bangkok is the usual gateway for most travellers, and you should plan on three or five days in the capital. This should
allow sufficient time for seeing the major sights such as the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Vimanmek Mansion. Perhaps also a trip along the Chao Phraya River or a shopping jaunt to Chatuchak Weekend Market.
